Last month, in an act of sheer lunacy (or brilliance), I joined with three partners — one old friend and two new ones — to buy a 15+ year old camera and photography shop in Barcelona!!!

To make it official, I flew to the fabulous city I had not visited for 20 years — in Catalonia (Spanish) or Catalunya (Catalan) — to work with lawyer(s) and an accountant to form a company in Spain. Then I spent a week in the shop with two of the partners, met people from all over the world, soaked up as much Spanish food and Catalan culture as I could, then flew home wishing I could have stayed in Barcelona.

As someone who has been passionate about photography for 50+ years, buying into a camera shop anywhere in Europe felt like the coolest thing I’d ever done! So, with great excitement, the gang of four partners launched our new/old shop on July 1, 2024!! After that, we started the less glamorous day-to-day tasks of running a business and planning ways to grow it, while keeping it creative and magical. The shop may end up providing me with a wonderful retirement life, but I’ll need to learn Spanish for real, finally… ¡Muy rápido!

RENOVATION & REBIRTH

Our gang of four partners have many fun, creative, exciting ideas for what we’ll do with the Barcelona shop in the days ahead. We dream that it will not just be a shop selling and repairing things, but also a gathering place for enthusiasts and artists. And maybe, hopefully, it can become a cultural-creative zone that draws people from around the world. Might as well dream big, right?

But first things first! We’ve finished the first phase of renovating the shop, stocked the shelves with vintage and new cameras, and filled the refrigerator with films. We are getting ready for our planned GRAND REOPENING on NOVEMBER 1st, 2024!
