When Polaroid released the Blue 600 “Reclaimed Edition” duo-chrome instant film, I was thrilled, and immediately bought 5 packs! To test the new film, I shot the first pack of eight exposures with great anticipation (previous post) in my favorite camera, the Polaroid SLR 680SE. Loved the moody, blue-duotone results!
Remember: Polaroid 600 format filM has batteries built into each film pack, which powers the vintage 600 cameras!
Two weeks later, my fertile imagination came up with an idea to shoot my next pack of Blue 600 film in a blue camera. Why not? Should be fun… So, I grabbed an untested, vintage, blue Polaroid One600 “classic” (original version) camera from my shelf and headed out on a cool spring day. As you can see in the test photos below, I got some unexpected and interesting results!
Camerapedia has great One600 details here…
Jim Grey made a nice post about the ONE 600 here…
When I loaded the pack of Blue 600 film into my One600 camera (see the test video on YouTube and below), the protective “dark slide” ejected normally, no hesitation or unusual motor sounds. Not bad for a camera made 20 years ago, unused for a long time, and probably never serviced! But after that, everything went sideways…
Pressing the One600’s shutter button the first time, it fired/clicked as expected. I heard the motor start moving the rollers to eject the photo, BUT THEN IT GROUND TO A HALT, with my photo stuck inside! I was upset — less because this was uncommon — more because the Blue 600 film had completely sold out…
I tried shaking and pressing on the camera body in different areas, to release the stuck rollers, to no avail. Finally, pressing the shutter button again, it clicked, and stalled again without ejecting. Frustrated and out of other ideas, I pressed hard on the shutter button and kept it depressed for a few moments after it clicked and stalled this time… To my surprise and delight — it ejected! The result? A TRIPLE-EXPOSURE, because the shutter was releasing normally each time, though the photo would not eject!
Same thing happened with exposures 2-8 of the pack, but I tried something different to get the camera to eject the photos. After each shutter CLICK-JAM occurred, I held the One600 camera under my jacket and opened it just enough to simulate and provoke the initial dark-slide ejection. IT WORKED! But, since it was not completely dark under my jacket, a light flare was produced at the bottom of each Blue 600 instant photo.
The polaroid One600 series of cameras had built-in flash and auto-focus from infinity to 3 feet from the subject.
